Description*

In 1985, Higashikawa Town (Kamikawa District, Hokkaido) declared itself "The Photography Town" and started an annual summer international photography festival, the "Higashikawa International Photo Festival."Along with the festival, the Higashikawa Awards were established. For over 30 years, the Higashikawa Awards have served to recognize, collect, and exhibit the works of both domestic and international photographers. Along with the International Artist Award, Domestic Artist Award, New Artist Award, and Special Artist Award (works from Hokkaido-born artists or artists residing in Hokkaido, or Hokkaido-themed works), in 2010 the Hidano Kazuemon Award, a new award honouring the memory of Kazuemon Hidano, a Higashikawa Town photographer, was established. The works selected for this new award are uniformly excellent and will certainly form a valuable collection.

This exhibit will introduce works from the Higashikawa Awards collection selected based on the theme "Chirei - Things Awakened."  "Chirei (genius loci)" are protective spirits residing in the land. When photographers take photos of scenery or people's daily lives, they reveal the existence of the chirei--perhaps at the moment they click the camera shutter they are actually trying to call them forth. We hope you will enjoy the profound realm revealed through these works.

Railbuses* were used on the Nanbu Jukan Railway Line (南部縦貫鉄道線) running between Noheji and Shichinohe from 1962-1997. Although the line went out of use in 2002 the railbuses have been preserved and maintained in running condition, and are periodically put on public display.

This is the first display of the Takahashi Collection within Aomori Prefecture. In order to serve as a fitting introduction to the collection, this exhibit features precious early works of Yayoi Kusama, representative works from the late 1990s to early 2000s of other famous Japanese artists such as Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, Akira Yamaguchi,Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Kenji Yanobe,Tomoko Konoike, and Izumi Kato, as well as works of young artists such as Nobuaki Takekawa, Chim↑Pom, Mikiko Kumazawa, Kasetsu, and the current topic of conversation, teamLab. While the exhibit focuses on great works of paintings, you can also enjoy viewing unique film and 3-dimensional works. Please enjoy 14 groupings of living artists from the same period.

Living in Japan now, we are dealing with various issues. Is it possible to live comfortably and prosperously while co-existing peacefully with nature? How will internet relationships where you can't see each other change society? Does peace always require sacrificing some to be victims? Is it not possible to age happily? What will be be left as an inheritance for the children? . . . Artists are also struggling with these questions. Since the 1950s Kusama Yayoi has constantly brought questions and messages of "Love and Peace" to the world.　We can gain a new perspective on daily thoughts when we combine our own stories with the feelings we get from the varied messages of the artists as reflected in their works.

“Go with cats. Iwago Mitsuaki Photography Exhibit”

Description:

Renowned world wildlife photographer Iwago Mitsuaki has photographed cats for over 40 years. "If you watch the movements of cats, they will seem like humans." On the roads that people walk, cats are there alongside them. Cats also appear in people's lifestyles and way of living. 
This exhibit features photographs taken by Iwago-san in recent years in various countries and including photographs of Aomori cats.

“JUMP – The World of Play as Art”

(ジャンプ　－アートにみる遊びの世界－jump －art ni miru asobi no sekai)

Description:*

Something that surely cannot be forgotten but exhibits an unexpected power depending on how it is used. Gravity.

Watching children jumping, it seems as if they are completely unaffected by gravity. Is it that gravity doesn't affect children, or that adults have simply lost the ability to jump/fly? There may be imaginative/open-minded adults that are still able to jump. This is an exhibit by various artists about adults who haven't discarded their ability to jump and continue to live among the stars.

Interacting with the power of the stars, the Art Museum has been enveloped in works that may seem to be tricks or practical jokes. Believing in the infinite creativity possible on earth, with all of our hearts and bodies, everyone, let's JUMP!
