The theme for this year's rice field art is "Yamata no Orochi & Susanoo-no-Mikoto*" for the main site and "Momotaro" (Peach Boy) for the second site (Michi no Eki Inakadate "Yayoi no Sato").

(*Japanese myth from the "Kojiki" about Susanoo-no-Mikoto slaying the 8-headed dragon "Yamata no Orochi.")

Hachinohe Enburi is a local traditional festival for ushering in the spring and praying for a good harvest for the upcoming year. Groups of dancers and musicians parade through the city, many wearing tall eboshi hats symbolically designed to resemble the shape of a horse's neck since horse's were vital for farm work.

Winter Rice Field Art 2017 with Simon Beck's Snow Art
冬の田んぼアート (Fuyu no Tanbo Art)

Snow artist Simon Beck creates geometrical artworks by walking across/around fields of snow in snow shoes. He has traveled all over the world creating snow art works. Last year (2016) he created his first piece in Japan right in Aomori Prefecture in Inakadate, the home of rice field art! This year, he will be creating an artwork in collaboration with local volunteers.

The Kiha 104, a diesel train celebrating its 60th anniversary since it was first made in 1956, is the main draw of this year's event.

Railbuses* were used on the Nanbu Jukan Railway Line (南部縦貫鉄道線) running between Noheji and Shichinohe from 1962-1997. Although the line went out of use in 2002 the railbuses have been preserved and maintained in running condition, and are periodically put on public display.

(*A railbus is a very lightweight type passenger rail vehicle (typically non-articulated or rigid frame) (Source: Wikipedia).)
